How can I feed my family healthily on a budget?

Our expert says:

  • Plan the meals for the week ahead and write your shopping list based on this. This will avoid wastage and will allow you to consider if there is a balance of foods across the week
  • Consider doing your shopping online, the savings you will make from no impulse purchases are likely to outweigh the delivery cost. You can also amend orders so if the cost of your order is too high you can go through and see what you could do without
  • To reduce the cost of meat and fish try; using skinless chicken thighs instead of breasts or buy a whole chicken and have a roast dinner one day and make a chicken curry or have cold chicken with potatoes and salad the next; buy braising steak to make a casserole; buy a larger pack of lean mince and make a double quantity of bolognese sauce to put one in the freezer; consider using tinned and frozen fish as well as fresh - tinned mackerel/sardines in different sauces as a lunchtime dish or frozen fish fillets to make a meal which are often cheaper than fresh.
  • Buy fruit and vegetables seasonally and choose those which are on offer - as well as staples such as apples and bananas buy strawberries, blueberries or blackberries when they are in season and the price goes down. Buy frozen summer fruit to make desserts or smoothies and keep a bag of frozen mixed vegetables or peas in the freezer for quick additions to meals.
  • Use tinned or dried bans and pulses to bulk out and boost the nutritional content of meals.
